What is the Supraspinatus Tendon?

The supraspinatus tendon is one of four rotator cuffs. The rotator cuffs help to stabilize the shoulder joint, as well as help to give it strength, movement, and rotation. The supraspinatus is often said to be one of the most important rotator cuffs because it helps to move the arm outwards and upwards, being responsible for nearly all of this movement. Despite this, it is also the smallest and one of the smallest tendons and muscles in the body—although one of the most important if not the most important.

An injured supraspinatus often means that a person will be unable to “resist the gravitational weight” of their arm, or otherwise be unable to lift their arm up above shoulder height. Some serious supraspinatus tears after a slip and fall may leave a person completely unable to move their arm upwards above what the other rotator cuffs could pull up, which is minimal.

The supraspinatus also helps to stabilize the joint and assist in other movements that the other three rotators cuffs are primarily responsible for. This includes helping to perform lateral rotation of the arm.

How Can a Supraspinatus Tear Happen in a Fall?

The supraspinatus is a very dense tendon, meaning it is also very strong. Given its position being lower than the other tendons, and tucked below heavily layers of muscle, the supraspinatus is also well-protected.

But that does not mean that the supraspinatus if invincible. A supraspinatus tear can happen for many reasons, including for baseball players just throwing normally (wear and tear), weightlifters, and victims in a personal injury accident like a car crash or trip and fall.

In slip, trip, and fall accidents, a supraspinatus tear could be caused when a person lands very hard down, particularly downstairs, off a landing, or off a ladder. Although this is possible, it is not particularly likely as a cause for a supraspinatus tear. What is more common is when a person tries to break his or her fall and grabs onto something in a fall, twisting and yanking it as he or she falls. A person could also suffer a supraspinatus tear by landing on a completely outstretched arm in a very forceful impact.

Treatment for a Supraspinatus Tear

A supraspinatus tear after a slip and fall results treatment. Most treatment include pain management medication and treatment such as anti-inflammatories. This can help for minor tears or micro tears, but not often for a fall-caused tear.

Cortisone shots or other pain-management injections are also common. These can help both reduce inflammatory but also block pain. These help and can allow the inflammation in the joint reside to allow the body to naturally heal a tear. However, this means that there will be a tear healed by scar tissue which may not be as strong as surgical intervention. For some individuals who are older or who may not have physically demanding jobs, this may be fine—although still painful, result in a decreased range of motion, and come with other complications.

Thus, surgical intervention through an arthroscopy surgery is common. This type of procedure can help repair the damage done through stitches, as well as removing scar tissue and other damages structures. This is required for a full thickness tear, or a complete tear, and may be required for partial tears for individual who have physical jobs.
