Slip and fall incidents are unfortunately all too common. Not only are they common, but they're almost always entirely avoidable. One type of injury commonly seen as a result of a slip and fall incident is a lateral collateral ligament injury, or LCL injury.

What is a Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL) Injury?

An LCL injury occurs when there is a tear or strain to the lateral collateral ligament. The lateral collateral ligament is a band of tissue which is located on the outer part of the knee. The LCL connects the lower leg bones to the thigh bone and keeps the knee from bending abnormally outward. The purpose of the LCL is to help stabilize the knee.

There are certain signs and symptoms that can indicate an LCL tear injury has occurred as a result of a slip and fall incident. According to the Cleveland Clinic, the signs and symptoms of LCL tears include the following:

LCL injuries are typically diagnosed with physical assessment and imaging such as x-ray or MRI. Visualizing the injury is important but it dictates how the surgeon will perform the surgery and from what locations the incisions will be made.

Treatment for an LCL injury largely depends on the grade of the injury. The grades of an LCL injury include the following:

Grade 1 - Mild LCL injury in which the LCL is not completely torn. Rest, the use of crutches or a brace and other home treatments are prescribed (i.e., anti-inflammatory drugs, ice, and knee exercises). Recovery typically takes 3-4 weeks.

Grade 2- Moderate LCL injury in which threes a partial LCL tear. Crutches and a hinged knee brace are required, and recovery typically takes 8-12 weeks.

Grade 3 - This is the most severe type of LCL injury. The LCL is completely torn of separated. Crutches and a hinged knee brace are required, and surgery may be necessary. Grade 3 LCL injuries take several months to heal.

Are There Any Complications From an LCL Injury?

There are certain complications that can occur as the result of an LCL tear after a slip and fall. People who experience LCL injuries due to a slip and fall incident may have long-term or even permanent knee instability and pain. If surgery is needed, there is the risk of infection or blood clots.
