ASTM Committee F-13 Precision and Bias Workshop

ASTM headquarters in West Conshohocken, PA was the site of a workshop on June 10, 1997 that was focused at developing data for use in the precision and bias statements of ASTM Standard Test Methods F-1677 and F-1679, otherwise known as the Brungraber Mark II and English XL standards. Any ASTM Standard Method that is published requires that a precision and bias statement be determined within five years after the Method is Standardized. These standards are the only two F-13 standards currently recognizing devices that can measure slip resistance under both wet and dry conditions on pedestrian walking surfaces. And as such are recommended to safety practitioners in the proposed ANSI A1264.2 Standard.

Keith Vidal was designated as a tester and performed a battery of tests with the English XL, as did five others. The tests were performed on three different surfaces, under wet and dry conditions. The effect of using different grit sand paper in preparation of the test feet was also incorporated into the test procedure by using two different test feet, one for 180 grit sanding and one for 400 grit sanding. Six separate individuals were also selected to perform an identical battery of tests using the Brungraber Mark II tester.
